So I was planning on sharing this with you yesterday but due to yet another off-the-charts crazy busy week, I wasn’t able to get it up in time.  But ALAS, here it is!  I’m pretty excited about this one.

So lately, I’ve been trying to cut back on my sugar intake.  In general, I don’t consume a lot of sugar, most of my sugar comes from all the fruit I eat but I’ve been trying to stay away from any added sugars.  I occasionally use coconut sugar but it seems like every new sweetener is getting attacked so I’m sure that one is next.  First they said to use honey but then they said it’s still sugar and does the same thing, then they said that agave was healthier but then people realized it might actually be worse than regular sugar.  AHH, so much conflicting information!  I can’t stomach fake sweeteners either, I tried to jump on the Stevia train but it tastes too much like aspartame to me which makes me want to barf.  I am hyper-sensitive to it, if I taste something and stevia is like ingredient #30 on an ingredient panel, I will still taste it and be unable to eat it (by the way I realize I shouldn’t be eating something with 30 ingredients, but I’m just saying :).

I’ve enjoyed using dates in my protein balls lately, it’s amazing how much natural sweetness they add without having to use added sugars.  So the other day, I was thinking about how I’d like to sweeten my tea with something so I decided to experiment a little and see if I could use the dates to create a natural sweetener.  It was a success! Holy cow, I was blown away!

Literally, just dates and water. Yup, that’s it.  I also added a little cinnamon & vanilla to make it extra yummy but I don’t think it’s necessary, I’m sure it work without it as well.

I do have to add a little disclaimer in here and let you know that I have a Vitamix that blends the crap out of everything so if your blender isn’t very powerful, it’s possible it might not be as smooth or mix into liquids as well.  I’ve enjoyed adding it to my tea, salad dressings & my morning green smoothies.  I’m storing it in the refrigerator although I’m not sure it’s necessary? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Whose life can’t use a little extra {natural} sweetness?






It hasn’t actually started yet, this picture is from a few years ago.  If you’ve been living in a box for the past 24 hours, Boston is supposed to get slammed with a massive blizzard tomorrow.  Whole Foods was already packed at 8:00 this morning and people are running around like crazy people ready for the world to end.  Me? I’m just excited! Excited to get cuddled inside and do some reading, maybe whip out the snow shoes and explore the island in the snow.  I’m just hoping we don’t lose power, that would really put a damper on my excitement.

Cinnamon Vanilla Date Syrup


  • 10-12 Large medjool dates (pitted)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • sprinkle cinnamon


1. Combine all of the ingredients together in a blender for a few minutes until smooth & creamy.

  1. I sometimes use date paste when I bake and I love the almost caramel flavor it adds! I usually store it in the fridge for up to a week.
    Fingers crossed neither of us loses power with this storm! I’m curious to see what Barley thinks of the up to 30 inches of snow we’re supposed to get…it’ll be so much taller than him! 🙂

      MMM, that sounds good! Do you make the date paste by just putting the dates in a food processor? I know – I’m kind of excited about the snow but not excited about the wind we’re supposed to get. Ha, I was wondering how Oto is going to go to the bathroom when the snow will be twice his height! Take some photos of Barley, I’m sure he’ll be super cute!

  4. This is a brilliant idea, thanks for posting! I am health conscious when it comes to sweeteners as well, and tend to use pure maple syrup or maple sugar. I haven’t used dates but they are on my “To Do” list so I need to try them. I think keeping this syrup in the fridge is a good idea since they are so moist to prevent mold growth.

  7. I just made this this morning. Yummy!! I then mixed some with some rolled oats and spooned onto pears that are cut in half for baking. Waiting for them to come out of the oven. Will be delicious.
